Writing a blog for your nonprofit is easier than you think, especially if your website already has the tools you need.
Writing posts in a “news” or “blog” section of your website can be a great way to drive traffic to your website. (It’s what we’re doing with this blog!) But just as important as using the tool is using the tool well.
Ready to post articles on your website? Here are six tips for getting started:
1. Brainstorm and keep track of a running list of blog post ideas
You have to start somewhere, right? Start a document (and even consider sharing it with your team) to keep track of ideas. When it’s time to incorporate a blog into your marketing strategy, reference this list for an easy start.
2. Use a keyword database to research topics people are searching for
Using a keyword research tool like Semrush can help you understand what is currently resonating with your audience. Most SEO research tools give you the opportunity to input one or more keywords into the platform and learn how frequently it is searched and how difficult it is to rank high in searches. The platforms will also suggest related keywords and phrases.
3. Create an outline for your blog to brainstorm content
Once you’ve decided on a topic, return to grade school and start an outline! Mapping out what you want to cover will help fill in the blanks.
4. Write in short paragraphs, including a strong lead and subheadings
Speaking of filling in the blanks… Make sure to write in short paragraphs. With limited attention retention, writing in short paragraphs will allow your readers to easily digest information. Break up your text with bolded subheadings.
The most important part? Writing a lead (the first 1-3 sentences of the article) that catches the reader’s attention and keeps it.
5. Once drafted, leave your piece for a day before proofreading
Our biggest tip is to leave a blog post for a day before coming back to proofread. Just like when you leave and come to a Sudoku puzzle, your eyes will catch new mistakes and missing information if you wait to proofread.
6. Ensure your blog title and body has SEO keywords from your search
Remember those keywords? Make sure to work them into your article! Best practice is to include a heavy amount in the opening paragraphs. But, don’t make your writing awkward by trying to make them work; keywords should flow easily into your copy.
