We spent over an hour on the action figure trend. Should your nonprofit?

Surely you’ve seen it by now. Others are using ChatGPT to turn their team into action figures. And we’ll admit — they’re funny. But they are really time-consuming.

Our team spent over an hour trying to build an action figure for just one member of our team. And if you’ve seen our post you know we didn’t even use it.

In our digital age, being “trendy” seems to be all that matters. But for nonprofits, dropping everything to spend an hour or longer going back and forth with AI to create the *perfect* trending post isn’t feasible — especially without a dedicated communications team.

This doesn’t mean you couldn’t create the perfect post in less than 10 minutes. We were able to create Sunny pretty quickly.

But when we decided to move on to another member of our team…. things didn’t go as well. Or really well at all. And instead of creating the perfect post just to hop on a trend, we were left banging our head against the wall. (We apologize in advance, Kylie).

We started here (not bad but much more cartoon than we had in mind)..

And then suddenly, Kylie’s dog Luna became a mom….

And then, she became a mom again (and also a lil scary) and Kylie needed two water bottles (is that small one filled with something other than water??)

And we can certainly laugh about it now, but we spent all that time on a post that likely would have gotten us more likes… but not more business.

Trends can be SUPER fun…. but only if they don’t take away from what actually matters. Use trends to build awareness, but know that 9 times out of 10, they aren’t the solution to reaching your goals. They are a tool.

So, have you tried this trend? If you’d like to try your hand, here’s the ChatGPT prompt! (Just promise us you won’t spend more than half on hour on it.)

Create a 3D rendered image of a retro-style action figure box featuring me as marketing professional. The figure should be standing confidently, smiling. The figure is inside a vintage toy-style blister pack, complete with a cardboard background in [BRAND COLOR].

Inside the blister, include miniature accessories that reflect my job and daily tools – [PUT YOUR ACCESSORIES HERE]. I’d like the overall look and layout to feel [DESCRIBE YOUR BRAND]. Use a soft, cohesive color palette that suits my branding and include my business name (BUSINESS NAME) and title (JOB TITLE) on the front of the packaging in a bold, retro-inspired font.
